What is Stump Grinding? + Stump Grinding Process and Costs

Stump grinding is mechanically removing a tree stump by chipping away the wood with a rotating cutting disk. We use specialized equipment to grind the stump down to below grade, typically 4-6 inches, leaving behind fine wood chips that can be used as mulch or removed by us or the client as requested.

The stump grinding process is an efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional stump removal methods, which can be labor-intensive and disruptive to the surrounding landscape. Costs for stump grinding vary depending on factors such as the size and location of the stump and any additional services required, such as cleanup or grass seeding.

We often recommend stump grinding as part of a comprehensive tree care plan, especially when dealing with hazardous trees or pruning projects.

Benefits and Considerations of Stump Grinding

We recommend stump grinding for various reasons, including improved aesthetics, reduced tripping hazards, and the ability to plant new trees or landscaping in the area.

When considering stump grinding as part of our tree service, it’s important to evaluate the location and size of the stump, as well as any nearby structures or utilities that could be impacted during the removal process. Our team can provide a consultation to assess the site and determine the best approach for your needs.

In addition to stump grinding, we offer services, including tree removal, pruning, overgrowth clearance, and hazardous tree management. Once the stump is removed, we can prepare the area for grass seeding or other landscaping options.

What Happens to the Wood Chips and Debris After Grinding?

We grind grind each stump with two passes, the first is regarded as the “wood pass” and contains the largest percentage of wood chips and debris to be removed. We then finish with a “finish pass” where the majority of material removed is soil and remaining root mass. This is then replaced in the area that has been ground out and covered with fresh topsoil. All undesired material is then cleaned up and properly disposed of and can be used as mulch if requested.

Will Stump Grinding Damage Surrounding Plants or Landscaping?

We take care to avoid damaging surrounding plants and landscaping during stump grinding. If needed, we’ll cover them or work cautiously around them. Our goal is to complete the job without harming your yard’s aesthetics.
